Started this past September, Kin’s and COBS furthered this program by partnering up with a volunteer program founded by UBC students called NutriKids. Working closely with the organization, the seminars will be presented by carefully selected volunteers, all of whom are currently enrolled in the UBC Food, Nutrition and Health program. One of the presenters, Jessica Wang, said that she is definitely “excited to teach the students how to make healthier, smarter food choices.” She hopes that her presentations will be fun and memorable for the children. Along with their enthusiasm and background knowledge on nutrition, the presenters will be visiting local schools in the Lower Mainland, from North Vancouver all the way down to Chilliwack, educating school children on healthy eating habits.
Through the combination of show-and-tell activities and tasty fruit snacks, students will experience factual life lessons in a way that is memorable for both minds and stomachs. They are also given a fun, interactive activity book in the end as a reminder to eat healthy foods in the classrooms and at home. This book, entitled ‘My Personal Best!’, is filled with fun word games, cross-word puzzles and mouth-watering recipes that’s meant to be shared between both parent and child. In addition, Alexa Loo, Canada’s 2010 Winter Olympics hopeful, is featured throughout the book teaching readers about nutrition. She is currently hosting a contest located in the back of the activity book, for a chance to win a 2 day & 3 night family ski vacation at Whistler Blackcomb.
The Nutrition Program is scheduled to run from September 2009 until June 2010. If you would like to learn more about the Nutrition Program, please contact us.
