Three local businesses raised $7,000 for the Canadian Cancer Society.


On September 18, Meinhardt Fine Foods, Meridian Meats, and Kin’s Farm Market held a barbeque-style lunch for Kitsilano residents and raised $7,000 for the Canadian Cancer Society. A month after the event, on October 20, representatives from Meinhardt, Meridian Meats, Kin’s Farm Market, and Canadian Cancer Society attended an informal cheque presentation that took place inside Meinhardt Arbutus.

“It’s amazing what a difference a community can make,” said Jocelyn Kwok of Canadian Cancer Society. “We thank the local community who came out on September 18th and supported us by purchasing a lunch.”

The three local businesses joined forces on September 18 and put together an outdoor event filled with barbeque-style lunch options and entertainment for all ages. Several bands performed for the audience and a bouncy castle kept the kids busy. Customers who spent over $10 inside Meinhardt received a free lunch ticket, while others purchased lunch tickets for $5 per plate. All proceeds collected from lunch sales went directly towards the Canadian Cancer Society.

“The funds raised during the event will benefit Canadian Cancer Society’s programs and initiatives,” said Kin Wah Leung, President of Kin’s Farm Market. “It was great to see folks from this [Kitsilano] community supporting such a great cause.”

Meinhardt began selling raffle tickets in August for the grand prize draw of a 2010 Vespa scooter. More than half of the funds collected from the Vespa scooter raffle went towards benefiting the Canadian Cancer Society. The winner’s name was announced on event day; Dave Golinsky won a brand new 2010 Vespa scooter.

“The Vespa raffle draw was a huge hit with our customers,” said Linda Meinhardt, owner of Meinhardt Fine Foods. “This exciting prize helped us collect most of the funds for the Canadian Cancer Society.”

This fundraiser is not the only joint venture undertaken by the local three companies. Meinhardt Fine Foods is now selling Kin’s Farm Market and Meridian Meats products at their Arbutus location.
